New ring rolling mill

The new ring rolling mill

In 2018, the ERW 80 / 80-1250 / 420 electro-mechanical ring rolling mill of the BANNING® brand was put into operation. It replaces the former ring rolling mill, type RAW 40 (50) / 32 (40) -1250/360, which has been in operation since 1971.

All parameters ensure a perfect ring

The new ring rolling mill is integrated in a completely new, fully automated and linked production line, which in addition to the ring rolling mill essentially consists of the following systems / units:
Robots for laser-assisted measurement (geometry) of the forged blanks for rings before heating,

  • rotary chamber furnace for heating the standard grades,
  • double-chamber furnace for heating special grades,
Descaling system of the heated ring blanks before rolling,
Robots for laser-assisted measurement (geometry and temperature) of the rolled rings,
  • Robots for marking the rolled rings.

The entire material handling within the production line takes place with a portal-bound manipulator. The automated production process is controlled by a central process control system with a superimposed production control system.
Seamless rings with an outer diameter of 200 mm to 1,250 mm (in exceptional cases up to 1,500 mm), a height of 30 mm to 420 mm and a weight of up to 800 kg can be rolled.

The main benefits of the new ring rolling line are significantly shorter throughput times, a significantly reduced energy requirement, an optimized use of materials with the highest product quality at the same time, as well as the full traceability of materials within the process chain.

The new ring rolling line was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.
